Description
Offered for auction here is the booklet entitled "Egypt-Libya". The US had not yet entered World War II when the British faced the Africa Korps of General Erwin Rommel in Libya, but President Roosevelt was preparing to assist the British, given the dire consequences for the region should the Axis forces gain control of Egypt and the Suez Canal. Although the US provided no ground troops for this battle during June 1942-February 1943, it did gain valuable experience in supporting the British forces, which had full control of the campaign. The US conducted its first air attack in Europe of the war, bombing the Ploesti oil fields in Romania, using British bases in North Africa, in an effort to divert German attention from North Africa.US Army Campaigns of World War II - Egypt & Libya, North Africa
